The Town of Babylon’s Operation Gas Station is off to a successful start, according to town leaders.
The town-wide initiative called for the sprucing up of local unsightly gas stations, where the “Most Improved” establishments would be awarded with town acknowledgment.
Of the over 70 gas stations examined by the town, Valero Gas Station of West Babylon and Green Gas Station of Deer Park were the first two locations to upgrade their properties the most, according to the town.

On Monday, the Town of Babylon and the Long Island Gas Retailers Association — held a joint press conference at the Valero Gas Station to thank the owners for their cosmetic improvements.
“Down to the smallest detail, [Valero owner Nick Bartolomeo] was able to make this not only an attractive sight but, in our opinion, the most workable sight in the town,” said Babylon Town Supervisor Rich Schaffer.
Bartolomeo said the improvements were made possible because of the focus the town put on working with the gasoline retailer industry.
“I give all the credit to Mr. Schaffer and his team for helping us as it was a true energy of interest in transforming this station,” he said.
Next week, the Town Board will be presenting Jay Huang of Green Gas Station with a proclamation for repaving his station’s entrance, repainting the parking lots, and replacing old American flags.
