The numbers are in.

Long Island’s fastest-growing group of community news websites just saw its busiest year to date, with 1.25 million unique visitors coming to greaterlongisland.com sites in the past 12 months.

Collectively, the sites registered 2.1 million page views in 2018.

“This is all local traffic. Considering there’s 1.493 million people living in Suffolk County, it dawned on me that a huge percentage of our population was on the sites at some point in 2018, reading our stories and seeing our ads,” said Michael White of Greater Long Island Media Group LLC, publishers of GreaterPatchogue, GreaterBayShore, GreaterBabylon and GreaterPortJefferson.

“And we have tremendous plans for 2019; things no one is doing in local journalism.”

The Greater Long Island team includes editorial director Michael White, content manager Nicholas Esposito, promotions head Nicholas Marchand, freelance writers Matthew Ambrosio and Lon Cohen, proofreader Melissa Caprisecca, and a stable of talented photographers and filmmakers headlined by Benny Migliorino of Benny Migs Photo, and Ethan Meyer of That Guy Event Photo + Design.

The company started as greaterpatchogue.com in June of 2015 before expanding to the Bay Shore area in 2016, and then Babylon and Port Jefferson in 2017 before becoming Greater Long Island Media Group.

It was also announced this year that GreaterBabylon is now covering all of Babylon Town, which includes Lindenhurst and Amityville, among other hamlets and villages.

The company also launched a weekly podcast in 2018 called The495 Podcast, which can be found on iTunes, Spotify, PodBean, or by clicking here on greaterlongisland.com.

Lastly, GreaterPatchogue won 2nd place for Best News Website through the Press Club of Long Island in 2018, coming second only to the News 12 Long Island website.

“The goal from Day 1 was to become the go-to community news resource for the people of Patchogue and its surrounding areas,” said White, formerly of the Daily News. “The ultimate goal now is to be the preferred regional news outlet for all of Long Island. And we’re going to get there through creative and innovative ways.”

Aside from Greater Long Island print and broadcast-style news, the company also sponsors the annual Island to Table outdoor dining experience, a premier foodie fundraising event that showcases top chefs using top local ingredients. The funds go to benefit HomeGrown Change, a nonprofit gardening and sustainability group. Be on the lookout this winter into spring as we announce the 2019 chefs lineup.
