Amityville’s Katlyn Chookagian is getting her chance at the UFC Flyweight Champion title.
The 31-year-old Pennsylvania native is challenging Valentina Shevchenko (18-3, 7-2 UFC) at UFC 247 this Saturday at the Toyota Center in Houston.
Chookagian (13-2, 6-2 UFC), a heavy betting underdog at +700 odds, is coming off back-to-back unanimous decision victories over Jennifer Maia and Joanne Calderwood.
The “Blonde Fighter” takes on Shevchenko, who has been on a tear since moving to this weight class from bantamweight. Shevchenko’s won four straight bouts in the octagon, including an impressive head kick knock out over Jessica Eye. Click here to see the devastating kick.
“Valentina is definitely very good, and that’s why she’s a champ for a reason,” Chookagian told MMA Junkie, “and that’s why everyone knows who she is, but I think when she had her amazing head-kick knockout, everyone saw that and said she’s such a killer. And she is very good, but most of her fights were decisions, which makes it great for me because there’s a lot of rounds to study.”
The match will be a co-main event on the UFC 247 card; UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones (25-1-0, 1 NC) will be defending his belt against Stony Brook University alum Dominick Reyes (12-0).
